Combining her passion for styling and love for helping individuals truly feel amazing about themselves, Cheryl Katz created Fashionista Friends, an image consulting company. Her main objective for her clients is balancing the amazing, unique person everyone is in the inside with how one wants and needs to project themselves on the outside. Reaching this equilibrium in an invigorating and powerful step in confidence elevation and goal clarification.
“In today’s fast paced world, more than ever, achieving the perfect first impression is critical in reaching one’s goals,” says Cheryl. “I also came to the realization that an amazing chain reaction of well-being and fulfillment just radiates throughout the day when we leave first thing in the morning feeling confident and terrific about ourselves. A vital part of creating high self-esteem is how we view our appearance and I am passionate guiding clients in obtaining positivism about themselves.”
Cheryl is a board member of the prestigious New York Tri-State Chapter of the Association of Image Consultants International. She received her certification from the Fashion Institute of Technology and color analysis certification from the Image Resource Center of NY. Originally from Springfield, NJ, she is a graduate of Brandeis University (BA in psychology and economics) and NYU (MBA).
Her passion to help others gain empowerment and confidence without the hinderance of a negative first impression began with her observations during her prior career. “Years ago, when working on Wall Street as a senior economist, I repeatedly witnessed super intelligent, hard-working co-workers who were not given certain opportunities such as television appearances or large client meetings because of their lack of understanding the importance of portraying an appropriate business image… I strive to help others not to make that same mistake and to reach their full potential. It is vitally important to remember that first impressions are created within the first 15 seconds upon meeting someone, even before a word is spoken, and are difficult to alter later.”
She says her ideal client is someone open to change and ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Ultimately, the goal is to bring out one’s very best self and most of the time, minor changes make a big difference. Image consulting services can be beneficial for any age.
Clients look to Cheryl for image guidance, but in a gentle, honest manner that one would expect from a friend they know and trust. “A client could be someone experiencing a major life change–perhaps a divorce, a promotion or a new job–or perhaps just feels displeased or uncertain with their appearance and needs help polishing it up,” she says. “Sometimes people just need a reminder of how awesome they truly are.”
Cheryl’s services include power shopping and color consultations but also calls herself humorously a “wardrobe whisperer.” She explains that many people get lost in their own closet and wind up wearing their favorite subset of clothes over and over again. “They need a trainer to help expand their repertoire of clothing substantially while figuring out what stays and what needs to go.” Cheryl also loves educating others by speaking about various topics to help create happy and confident self-branding. She adds that given her past experiences appearing on television as an economist, she can work with clients to polish both their verbal and nonverbal presentation skills for both business and social settings.
Her biggest challenge when starting her business was finding out how intimidated some people feel about the idea of working with an image consultant. “Some feel judged, defensive, that working with an image consultant means looking like someone they are not. That’s why it’s of the utmost importance that I get to really know my clients, who they are and what’s important to them. Creating the right image is about making sure you are dressed appropriately to help you achieve your goals while balancing what makes you feel unique and special in the inside.” She says she works hard to create a friendly and fun environment throughout the process. Hence, the naming of the company, Fashionista Friends.
In her spare time, Cheryl says she enjoys cooking and has experience with different dietary styles including macrobiotics, dairy-free, and grain-free. She also loves shopping (no surprise!), hiking and spoiling her Tibetan terrier, Poppy.
Of course, her children come first and she’s employed her creativity to dream up specialty parties for them (including an interactive Super Heroes party for which she hired some local actors, acted out a script she’d written, and starred as Catwoman.) She even does Cosplay at events such as Comic Con with her teenage son, where they dress up (again, no surprise) as their favorite television or movie characters. With her daughters, she especially enjoys attending Broadway shows. A proponent of giving back, she is an active member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, where she helps with organizing the annual Rockland/Westchester Gala and Take Steps Fundraiser.
